The House on Mango Street: More than a Story In today’s world there are countless social problems. People are often treated as an inferior or as if they are less important for many different reasons. In The House on Mango Street, the author Sandra Cisneros addresses these problems. Throughout the story Cisneros does a thorough job explaining and showing how these issues affect the public. This novel is written through the eyes of a young girl, Esperanza, growing up in a poor neighborhood where the lifestyles of the lower class are revealed. Cisneros points out that, in today’s society, the expectation of women and their treatment, discrimination based on poverty, and discrimination because of a person’s ethnicity are the major problems in society. Sandra Cisneros often shows us how women are treated as subordinates in a patriarchal society. In society the way women are supposed to better themselves is by marrying. Often women marry at a young age which Cisneros condemns in The House on Mango Street by stating that her friend, Sally, should not have gotten married by saying: Sally got married like we knew she would, young and not ready but married just the same. She met a marshmallow salesman at a school bazaar, and she married him in another state where it’s legal to get married before eighth grade. She has her husband and her house now, her pillowcases and her plates. She says she is in love, but I think she did it to escape. (101) This excerpt shows how Cisneros believes that she should not have gotten married at a young age when she says that Sally is â€Å"young and not ready†. The author also reinforces how women too often get married â€Å"to escape†. Esperanza tells us that after the women get married they are suppos... ...me to think when the cop car pulled in the alley going just as fast. (24) This quote shows that in their society people often did the wrong thing, but the people did everything with a good intention and that they are not just evil. Sandra Cisneros ends up conquering the social issues that had oppressed her. The role of a woman was rejected through her remaining independent. By her becoming successful and getting out of poverty the discrimination towards impoverished people is overcome. Lastly, she overcomes the racism by writing about it so that people everywhere can realize that it is wrong. Throughout The House on Mango Street women’s roles and the way they are treated, the judging based upon wealth, and racism are major issues that Esperanza has to work to overcome. Compare and contrast of feudal systems in Japan and Europe Essay

Japanese feudal system during the Kamakaru Shogunate from 1100 to 1868 and Europe’s feudal system during the middle ages from the 800’s to the 1600’s were similar regarding warriors and weapons, considering that they were based on similar codes of conduct and weaponry, were similar in their socio-political division that had a similar hereditary hierarchy, but the treatment of women differed in that women were allowed to serve in Japanese warrior class but not in the European’s. European knights were very similar to the Japanese samurais; not only were they similar in their codes of conduct, but they had similar weaponry. The Knights were based on Chivalry which consisted bravery, respect and honor. The Samurais followed a similar code of conduct called bushido meaning â€Å"the way of the warrior† which consisted of loyalty, bravery in the martial arts, and honor until death. The similarity in their weapons was the use of swords, horses, small knife s, and armor. Although Europeans had a much heavier armor made of metal which immobilized knights, Japanese armor can still be compared to the armor of the knights. Reasons for this similarity is that both systems were faced with constant warfare, and their conducts were somewhat based on religion although Japan basing bushido from Confucianism and Europe basing chivalry from Catholicism. The socio political divisions of Japan and Europe are similar in that they are both stratified hierarchy. They both had hereditary classes of nobles, warriors, and peasants and serfs. Constant warfare in both Japan and Europe made the warrior class the most prominent. In Japan, since the Mongols wanted to attack the Japanese were always prepared and lived in terror. Japanese and Europeans also built protective castles. Like in Europe the kings gave land fiefs to vassals, Shoguns distributed land to his followers. In both feudal systems warriors served local lords. While lords offered payment and protection vassals provided loyalty. Fiefs of land were given in return for military service and therefore knights gained lands from lords as payments for their militar y service. Although similar to Europe, Japanese feudal system did not pay samurais with land, but instead paid them a ratio of the earnings from taxing the peasants; usually the Daimyo taxed peasants and owned land. As stratified hierarchies, both had a lowest class who were serfs in Europe and peasants in Japan. In both regions, serfs and peasants were heavily taxed and toiled. One reason for the similarity in stratification was that both Japan and Europe were  decentralized. Although Japan and Europe had similarities in their warriors, weaponry, and socio political stratification, the treatment of women varied in each region. Women in Japan were treated more equally; they were able to join the samurai army and were expected to act like a samurai and be strong like men, even if it meant dying after losing a battle. Unlike the costume of Japan, Europeans saw women as fragile, and delicate who were to be protected by chivalrous men.

One of Flannery O’Connor’s most successful stories, â€Å"Good Country People† was published in 1955. â€Å"Good Country People† addresses the of good versus evil, the foolishness of intellectual pretensions, and most importantly the theme of reality versus illusion. An important character Mrs. Hopewell’s daughter Hulga, born as Joy has a Ph. D but seems to have no common sense. She allows her self to be tricked by a â€Å"Bible salesman† and gets her self in to a binding situation. Good Country people deals with illusion vs. reality this is shown when the author discusses Manley Pointer; the bible sales man, Joy thinking she is ugly, and the fact the Hulga and her mother tend to disagree about Hulga’s life decisions. In the novel The Things They Carried by Tim OBrien, metafiction is used to further the story. OBrien used the metafictional devices of irony, and nonlinear sequencing of events in order to push his story and properly represent the experience of war. Each metafictional device is used in order to advance the meaning of the story and let the reader truly understand the emotions and experience of being at war. Whether or not the story is perfectly true is not important, for OBrien is telling the story of the hardships and brotherhood of war rather than the exact facts. The first and most common of the metafictional devices OBrien used in the novel is irony. OBrien pushed the irony of Mary Ann’s story even further than just defying gender norms as he juxtaposes innocence and the savagery of war together through Mary Anns actions and appearance at the end of the chapter. The men all talk about how Mary Ann is still out in the woods fighting, they say; â€Å"she was wearing her culottes, her pink sweater, and a necklace of human tongues† (110). Although it is extremely unlikely that this experience ever happened, OBrien uses this story to show just how life changing war can be, he proves that even the most innocent person can walk into the war and come out a savage, hostile and war oriented person. Had he never juxtaposed the innocence of Mary Ann and her ‘girly’ clothing against the demented and horrifying necklace of severed tongues, his point may have never had the deep message he wanted to portray. He suggests that the leaders should invest more time in the formulation of a good strategy rather than simply possessing charisma and vision.' He clearly points out the bad strategies that need to be avoided. He also mentions the two main reasons that trigger the failure of recognizing the bad strategies. First being the inability to choose and other the template-style planning. He states that companies fail to set the priorities for the company. According to Rumelt, some goals are o be prioritized in comparison to others. This would help the company to concentrate one thing at a time. It would also ensure that the company and its employee do not get confused with the other goals. Second, he mentions the template-style planning (Leih, Linden and Teece 2014). According to Rumelt, the template-style planning confuses the company, and weak strategies are the result of such planning. He states that these statements are good for motivational speech but the ground reality differs. He states that this template confuses the strategies of the company and it should be avoided (Hoffman and Woody 2013). Rumelt in his article clearly describes the importance of identifying bad strategies and implementation of good strategies, be it in the government policies or any business. He cites individual examples for every hallmark of the bad strategies he propagated. In my opinion, the strength the article lies in the fact that Rumelt was able to identify each of the fallacy that the strategists succumb to when surrounded in a sticky situation (Hung 2015). The most significant factor that he pointed at that before starting to build plans for any company, one needs need to understand the issues that are prevalent in the company (Bharadwaj et al. 2013). The strategists need to identify the market issues that might threaten the company and its performance in the future. Rumelt cited the example of International Harvester while he was elaborating his failure to face the problem point. His explanation of the situation and the result that followed were an absolute fit for the point he aimed at. I a gree with Rumelt that identification of the challenges and working on them is the first step to success in any field (Bentley, Omer and Sharp 2013). I second Rumelt as he suggested that strategist should know the stark difference between strategies and objectives (Grant 2016). Rumelt explains that a list of objectives should not be mistaken as a strategy. Pushing the limits is one thing and harping on unrealistic visions is different. The leader should have a clear focus of the objective and then try to chalk out the action plan according. Goals and objectives are very important, but the one need to comprehend the importance of working on the glitch present in the company. I believe without eradicating the issues; one cannot materialize the vision (Rothaermel 2015). However, I oppose the criticism on the template Style Strategy made by Rumelt. Without a clear mission-vision statement, a company would not be able to establish a direction in which the company should move to achieve the vision. The mission-vision statement would help them identify the possibility they can achieve over a long-term period. A company needs an anchor in the form of mission and vision statements; as it would guide them and help them formulate the strategies accordingly (Verbeke 2013). Rumelts good strategies are apt and can be used as stepping stone for the success of the company. I opine that the successful implementation of the three-point good strategies propagated by Rumelt is helpful in formulating custom-made strategies for any company. The example of the start-up company stated by Rumelt aptly testifies the successful outcomes of this three-point strategy (Basili et al. 2013). However, I oppose the concluding note of the article, which states that leadership skills are not important for strategies. I opine that an effective leader is capable of changing the course of the company. A leader knows when and how to formulate the strategies which Rumelt has been discussing all through the article. A leader is a person who has the capability to judge a certain situation and come up with ideas to combat to overcome obstacles. For example, A. G. Lafley, former CEO of PG changed the course of his company during his tenure of leadership. The company brand name was well established when he joined, but serious issues like the decline in sales were lingering. Lafley with his leadership qualities was able to formulate strategies and keep the employees motivated. He was instrumental in bringing back the company on tracks and doubled the sales of the company to approximately $84 billion. According to the Business Insider Magazine, he is one of the most successful executive s in the history of the company ("PG's Legendary Ex-CEO Explains Why Everyone Gets Strategy Wrong"). On that note, I would like to mention that strategies are important but a leader is the one who can formulate the correct strategies for the company who will be able to change the course of the company. To conclude my analysis, I would state that the journal article written by Rumelt was inspiring and comprehensive. However, there are points with which I completely disagree. I support the fact the bad strategies should be identified and avoided completely. Even the good strategies mentioned in the article are good enough to benefit a company. However to completely negate the input and importance of a leader is not wise according to me. As the leader is the one who can identify the issues and formulates accurate strategies for the company. Strategies alone would not work if the leadership of the company was crumbling. Thus the strategies and leadership should work together to get the optimum result for the company. Without the leader, formulation of the strategies would be "fluffy" and the without the strategies the leader would not be able to help the company visualizes his vision.
