Illusion vs Reality in “Good Country People” Essay

One of Flannery O’Connor’s most successful stories, â€Å"Good Country People† was published in 1955. â€Å"Good Country People† addresses the of good versus evil, the foolishness of intellectual pretensions, and most importantly the theme of reality versus illusion. An important character Mrs. Hopewell’s daughter Hulga, born as Joy has a Ph. D but seems to have no common sense. She allows her self to be tricked by a â€Å"Bible salesman† and gets her self in to a binding situation. Good Country people deals with illusion vs. reality this is shown when the author discusses Manley Pointer; the bible sales man, Joy thinking she is ugly, and the fact the Hulga and her mother tend to disagree about Hulga’s life decisions. This deals with the concept of illusion vs. reality because, Hulga feels that she is ugly therefore she ch anges her name to fit the way she feels about herself. Finally the last example of illusion vs. reality is the constant disagreeance between Hulga and her mother. Hulga’s mother, Mrs. Hopewell, convinced that Hulga would have â€Å"been better without a useless PhD. degree in philosophy†, has no comprehension of the one true meaning of life to her daughter. Mrs. Hopewell feels that she can not brag on Hulga because, she sees her daughter as unsuccessful in life due to the meaninglessness of her degree. She is also upset with the fact that Hulga, formally known as Joy changes her name to better fit her personality. She feels that joy is a beautiful name and that Hulga is opposite from her view of herself. In final analysis the glass eye relates to the overall theme of the story illusion vs. reality because, the characters in the story see their situations differently than how they truly are. The main character joy has no common sense and struggles to find her own identi ty. Another important aspect of illusion vs. reality is the â€Å"bible salesman† who is truly a con artist and get Hulga into a bind. Hulga’s mothers opinion of her is also seen to be an illusion to what it really is. Rumelt has identified four signs of bad strategies- the failure to face the challenges, mistaking goals for strategy, bad strategic objectives and fluff. According to Rumelt, the template-style planning confuses the company, and weak strategies are the result of such planning. He states that these statements are good for motivational speech but the ground reality differs. He states that this template confuses the strategies of the company and it should be avoided (Hoffman and Woody 2013). Rumelt in his article clearly describes the importance of identifying bad strategies and implementation of good strategies, be it in the government policies or any business. He cites individual examples for every hallmark of the bad strategies he propagated. In my opinion, the strength the article lies in the fact that Rumelt was able to identify each of the fallacy that the strategists succumb to when surrounded in a sticky situation (Hung 2015). The most significant factor that he pointed at that before starting to build plans for any company, one needs need to understand the issues that are prevalent in the company (Bharadwaj et al. 2013). The strategists need to identify the market issues that might threaten the company and its performance in the future. Rumelt cited the example of International Harvester while he was elaborating his failure to face the problem point. His explanation of the situation and the result that followed were an absolute fit for the point he aimed at. I a gree with Rumelt that identification of the challenges and working on them is the first step to success in any field (Bentley, Omer and Sharp 2013). I second Rumelt as he suggested that strategist should know the stark difference between strategies and objectives (Grant 2016). Rumelt explains that a list of objectives should not be mistaken as a strategy. Pushing the limits is one thing and harping on unrealistic visions is different. The leader should have a clear focus of the objective and then try to chalk out the action plan according. Goals and objectives are very important, but the one need to comprehend the importance of working on the glitch present in the company. I believe without eradicating the issues; one cannot materialize the vision (Rothaermel 2015). However, I oppose the criticism on the template Style Strategy made by Rumelt. Without a clear mission-vision statement, a company would not be able to establish a direction in which the company should move to achieve the vision. The mission-vision statement would help them identify the possibility they can achieve over a long-term period. A company needs an anchor in the form of mission and vision statements; as it would guide them and help them formulate the strategies accordingly (Verbeke 2013). Rumelts good strategies are apt and can be used as stepping stone for the success of the company. I opine that the successful implementation of the three-point good strategies propagated by Rumelt is helpful in formulating custom-made strategies for any company. The example of the start-up company stated by Rumelt aptly testifies the successful outcomes of this three-point strategy (Basili et al. 2013). However, I oppose the concluding note of the article, which states that leadership skills are not important for strategies. I opine that an effective leader is capable of changing the course of the company. A leader knows when and how to formulate the strategies which Rumelt has been discussing all through the article. A leader is a person who has the capability to judge a certain situation and come up with ideas to combat to overcome obstacles. For example, A. G. Lafley, former CEO of PG changed the course of his company during his tenure of leadership. The company brand name was well established when he joined, but serious issues like the decline in sales were lingering. Lafley with his leadership qualities was able to formulate strategies and keep the employees motivated. He was instrumental in bringing back the company on tracks and doubled the sales of the company to approximately $84 billion. According to the Business Insider Magazine, he is one of the most successful executive s in the history of the company ("PG's Legendary Ex-CEO Explains Why Everyone Gets Strategy Wrong"). On that note, I would like to mention that strategies are important but a leader is the one who can formulate the correct strategies for the company who will be able to change the course of the company. To conclude my analysis, I would state that the journal article written by Rumelt was inspiring and comprehensive. However, there are points with which I completely disagree. I support the fact the bad strategies should be identified and avoided completely. Even the good strategies mentioned in the article are good enough to benefit a company. However to completely negate the input and importance of a leader is not wise according to me. As the leader is the one who can identify the issues and formulates accurate strategies for the company. Strategies alone would not work if the leadership of the company was crumbling. Thus the strategies and leadership should work together to get the optimum result for the company. Without the leader, formulation of the strategies would be "fluffy" and the without the strategies the leader would not be able to help the company visualizes his vision. This story wouldn’t be anything without the help of the one and only King Henry VIII. It was King’s, tie breaking with the Roman Catholic Church in the 1530’s that launch the reformation of the protestant church. The reformation of the church led to a group people to seek the purification of the English church, theses people were known as the â€Å"puritans†. The puritans later broke down into two groups when the reformation of the church wasn’t making any progress. One of these groups was the separatist also known as pilgrims; a tiny group of puritan who vowed to break entirely away from the England church. Losing their English identity, these separatist departed for Holland in 1608 to flee royal wrath back in England. While in Holland, the separatist endured hard work and poverty for 12 years but it was the â€Å"dutchification† of their children that made them leave Holland and sail to New England to live and die as English men and women and as purified protestant. Securing rights with the Virginia Company to settle under its jurisdiction, the pilgrims sailed to America but missed their destination and finally chose to land at Plymouth bay in 1620 without the legal permission of the Virginia Company to land or establish government. Before disembarking the pilgrims leaders created and signed the brief mayflower compact; a simple agreement to form a crude government and to submit to the will of the majority under the regulations agreed upon. This pact was a promising step towards genuine self-government. The start of life in Plymouth rock wasn’t a bed rose for the pilgrims, especially during their first winter at the rock were they had it hard and only 44 out of 102 survived. Even though the winter was harsh not a single one of the pilgrims left when the mayflower was heading back to England in the spring. The pilgrims stayed around longer and being fortune with having men like William Bradford to help lead, the pilgrims saw a bountiful harvest by time the next autumn hit in 1621 creating the first thanksgiving in New England. This small settlement of pilgrims were still charter less and even though they were big morally and spiritually they did not succeed to become big economically and numerically until it merged with its neighbor; The Massachusetts Colony. This colony was home to the second group of puritans who came to America; the â€Å"non-separatist†. The non-separatist, were the puritans who didn’t leave England but stayed to try and purify the protestant church. The purification of the church still made no progress and in 1629 the non-separatist left England fearing for their faith and England’s future. The separatist secured a royal charter to form the Massachusetts Bay colony; they used the charter for many years as a constitution until they decided one day that they wanted to separate themselves from the England church only from its impurities. The non-separatist established a sizable settlement in the infertile Massachusetts area and was bless with a well-equipped expedition of 1630. It was also during the 1630’s when about 70,000 refugees left England for America creating what’s known today as â€Å"the great migration†, only a few of theses refugees made it to the bay colony while the rest settled in the West Indies especially in the Barbados. Many fairly well-to-do educated immigrates immigrated to the bay colony, including john Winthrop the bays first governor who served 19 years. The bay colony prospered as fur trading, fishing and shipbuilding industries with the resources and skills of talented people like Winthrop, he also help the colonist build a holy society that would be model for humankind. The bay franchise was extended to all freeman; adult males who belonged to the puritan congregation which in time came to be called the congregational church. Although the government was liberal by the standards of the time it was not a democracy, Governor Winthrop feared and distrusted the â€Å"commons† and thought that democracy was the meanest and worst of all forms of government. Winthrop felt that if the people were governors then who shall be governed he thought that only puritans, the visible saints who alone were eligible for church membership could be freemen. As time went on the bay colony continued to grow and enjoyed a high a degree of social harmony stemming from common beliefs but running into dissension. It was few a people that did not agreed with the bay’s â€Å"bible commonwealth†, people such as Anne Hutchinson; a woman who was banish from the puritan church when she claimed that a holy life was no sure sign of salvation and that the truly saved need not bother to obey the law of either god or man. Along with Hutchison was a young man name roger Williams who also challenged the English church. Williams was condemned for expropriating the land from the Indians without fair compensation he also went on to deny the authority of civil government to regulate religious behavior. This was seditious blow at the puritan’s idea of government’s very purpose. With the few troubles they had with those who disagreed with the idea of government the puritans faced another problem; they face troubles with Indians. Back when the first set of pilgrim settlers arrived, local Wampanoag Indians at first befriended the settlers. The Wampanoag chieftains massasoit signed a treaty with the Plymouth pilgrims in 1621 and helped them celebrate the first thanksgiving after the autumn harvest that year but things changed after that. In 1637, hostilities exploded between the English settlers and a powerful Indian tribe known as the Pequot tribe. The English militiamen and their Narragansett Indian allies annihilated the Pequot tribe and in 1675 massoits son, metacom (nicknamed king Phillip by the English) launched a series of attacks and raids against the colonist towns. The war ended in 1676. In 1643 four colonies banded together to form the New England confederation. The primary purpose of the confederation was defense against foes or potential foes like the Indians, the French and the Dutch. The confederation was essentially an exclusive puritan club, and although it was weak the confederation was the first notable milestone on the long and rocky road toward colonial unity. As New England grew over the period of time they social scale were great planters, small planters, landless whites and black slaves. New Englanders tended to migrate in families as opposed to single individuals and family always came first to the new Englanders. Along with families in southern colonies because men died frequently the widows were allowed to inherit the property and married women were allowed to retain separate title to their property but because the puritan worried that recognizing women’s separate property rights would undercut the unity of married persons they decided that the when a man died the church inherit the property not the wife. New England towns were legally chartered by the colonial authorities and the distribution of land was entrusted to proprietors every family received several parcels of land. Towns of more than 50 families had to have an elementary school and just after 8 years of the formation of the bay colony in 1636, the Harvard College was established. The puritans ran their own churches and democracy in congregational church government led logically to democracy in political overnment. As life in the new England towns continued to prosper the church started to decline losing many of its members because of its strict policies. In 1662 troubled ministers announced a new formula for church memberships known as the â€Å"half-way covenant†. The new arrangement modified the covenant between the church and its adherents, to admit to baptism but not â€Å"full communion†. This new formula helped boost the churches membership and help the church gain money. In 1692 a group girls in Salem, Massachusetts were claimed to bewitched and put on trialed, by 1693 the governor of Massachusetts ended the witchcraft hysteria and prohibited any further trials and pardoned those already convicted. As the years continued on the New England way of life steadily grew making New England a place for energy, purposefulness, sternness, stubbornness, self-reliance and resourcefulness ending â€Å"the puritan story† and starting the America we know today as home. .

Problem 2 From what I can see on Ricky’s cash flow is that he is relying on that one loan which is his capital that he begins with too and that is  £17,500 from the first month which is January. Bank loans are great for starting a business but that does not mean that they can not let you down in this case a bank loan can fail Rick because if the bank loan gets delayed or no longer available then this is a big problem for Rick because he cannot do anything best way to explain this would be he would not be able to pay for the truck which is  £20,000 and not only the truck that would not be paid for but the sales cost would not be covered. His total payments only for the beginning of year which is the month January his total payments are  £22,475 with this type of problems or should I say impacts that can happen there is no way that his business would survive. Problem 3 Another critical problem that can occur from that cash flow is if the sales figure is lower than the actual sales figure. For example the sales figure that has been predicted by Ricky is  £60,000 but let’s say that he actually gets  £40,000 as his total figure for his sales. This is a major problem simply because what he as predicted to get for his sales has not been met and  £40,000 worth of sales would not be enough to keep his business running regularly. Costs for everything would not be covered just because of this problem which again is very crucial for the business and of course loss  would occur there is no way that Rick would make any profit due to this problem. In addition the business would have to start the new month with a loss and again this is just because the total sales are low this would yet again mean that he cannot cover the costs for that month and he would have a greater loss that he would not allow him to recover fast enough for the next month in order for his business to be still up and working. Problem 4 Looking at Rick’s cash flow forecast I can see that there can be another problem that can occur and this problem is to do with his expenses and that is if his expenses turn out to be lower to what the actual expenses appear to be this can cause him not only a problem but a failure to his business because his expenses are  £71,750 and lets say for example they actually come out to be 81,950 this is where the big problem will occur because his expenses are higher and this would lead to Rick not being able to cover for the next year. Plus if the expenses go up in any month of the year this would decrease the chance of Rick gaining any type of profit and the balance would be different for the next month by all means this would affect the profit and balance within the business. 1.2 recommendations and solutions to the problems Solution to problem 1 Possible solution that Rick has for his bank loan problems is that he can either make sure to use his own savings that he has saved through out the years and that’s if he has saved any money in his savings account but probably the best and I would say most common way to get the money you need is if you ask friends to get you a loan or someone from the family to lend you money. He could also decide to get a small over draft which would keep his business running. Yet again lest not forget an overdraft has its disadvantage and that is when it come to paying back that over draft the interest rate would be high so he would have to think of a way to pay that off and it would not be an easy task for Ricky. Of course Ricky has the option of selling his own assets but that is just an option that could be left for last. In general I would recommend for Ricky to get a loan from his family or friends because in my opinion that is the best possible decision and the best possible way from h im to get his business up and running. “Australian Rules” essay Essay

Australian rules is set in a small rural town, where the relationships between the white townspeople and the Aboriginal people on the mission are complex, conflicted and marred by deeply entrenched racism. The local football team in many ways serves to represent the town, it reflects the conflicted relationship between the white people and the Aboriginal people- we begin to understand this as the film unfolds. Other themes inherent in the film are themes of family, love, loyalty and violence- the secrecy of domestic violence and the more overt forms of racial violence that spill out onto the public spheres of the football field and the pub. The opening narration informs us that half the football team is Aboriginal and that there would not be a football team without the Aboriginal players, therefore we understand how the town team relies on the talent and number of the Aboriginal players. We then witness the contradiction of the white and Aboriginal boys playing side by side as team members followed by the social segregation between the members after the match. This segregation is highlighted by Blacky (a white boy from town) and Dumby (an Aboriginal boy who is the best player on the team) whose friendship transcends these borders and we also witness ways that this segregation between the white teenager and Aboriginal teenagers is culturally imposed by certain adults. In one of the beginning scenes, just after a football match, Dumby and Blacky want to ‘hang out’ together, but Dumby is taken back to the mission by an older friend and Blacky cannot follow. Blacky, Clarence and Dumby all call out to each other ‘Nukkin ya’ and this use of Aboriginal language between two Aboriginal teenagers and Blacky the white boy signifies the level of their friendship and mutual acceptance. Pickles’ comment to Blacky that ‘now he even talks like one’, symbolises the town’s disapproval of such respect for Aboriginal culture and Aboriginal people. The character of Pretty, Dumby’s older friend from the mission, plays an important role in the film. He was once a talented football player himself but no longer ‘kicks goals for whitefellas’ and he is significant because he is the main character to verbalise that Aboriginal people are treated  differently and unfairly. He is somewhat aggressive in his approach, expressing bitterness and resentment, yet it is implied that his approach is reactionary to the way he has been treated, and his statementsoverlooked by the white coach- are significant examples of changing responses to uneven power dynamics. For example the white coach tells Dumby to make sure all the Aboriginal team players turn up to the next match and Pretty interjects stating that it doesn’t work that way anymore, his metaphor of ‘yes sir, no sir, three bags full sir’, clearly refers to the history of Aboriginal people being used as servants and points out that the coach’s approach of ordering Dumby around is no longer appropriate. Unfortunately the coach does not take this message on and rather than acknowledging the Aboriginal boys as talented, valuable and indeed essential team players, he nervously treats them as unreliable boys who may destroy the team’s chances by not turning up. This attitude of relying on Aboriginal talent, whilst refusing to appropriately acknowledge this talent is made explicitly clear during the award giving ceremony that takes place after the team win the finals. Pretty is made to leave the ceremony after he disputes the truth of a speech about the egalitarian nature of football ‘where you can be anyone, from anywhere, and receive the recognition you deserve’. Pretty is immediately proved to be right when the awards are given only to white boys, and Dumby, who is obviously the most talented player on the team is left completely unacknowledged. There is a direct shift in Dumby’s response and he becomes more like Pretty, demonstrating anger and resentment, rather than his normal cheerful, co operative self. This gives us insight into Pretty’s character and how he may have developed the attitude that he has towards white people. Pretty and Dumby’s break-in to the pub that very night can be interpreted as a direct response to the unfairness of the award ceremony- although there are characters, such as the coach, who are not willing to see the connection. The fact that Dumby is then murdered by Blacky’s father is a complicated event with many layers of meaning. The insights we have been given about Blacky’s father prior to the shooting is that of a man who dominates his family, puts down his sons for showing vulnerability and who physically abuses his wife. There are  instances in which we can see links between the violence he demonstrates towards his family and the verbal and physical violence he feels justified in displaying towards Dumby, and then later towards Dumby’s sister, Clarence. There is a scene in which the father physically attacks Blacky and forces Blacky to declare loyalty to him (regarding the shooting), meanwhile verbally abusing Clarence with racial slurs and ordering her to get out of his house. During this scene the camera pans onto the faces of the Blacky’s mother and siblings and we see how domestic and racial violence become enmeshed, that the father’s attack on Blacky for being with Clarence is an act of violence that hurts his whole family. Interestingly it is Clarence who is the least cowed in this scene, she does not show fear and walks out with dignity. In this way we can see how control and domination is a particular pattern in this family, but is not taken on by Clarence. In many ways, the shooting, and the following events, are catalysts for great changes, both in the town, and more specifically in Blacky’s family. Blacky rejects his parent’s demands to maintain loyalty to his father and instead Blacky remains loyal to his friendship with Dumby. Blacky’s rejection of his father’s authority instigates other members of the family, such as his mother and next youngest brother who subtly take Blacky’s side. The scene where his brother urges him to get up and face his father, (when his father beat him to the ground), symbolises the request of his family for Blacky to represent them all and challenge the father’s authority. The resolution of the film sees the father gone, leaving Clarence and Blacky happily together but planning to this town ‘that has nothing for them’. The fate of the town is not so happy, the boys from the mission won’t come to town and there is no longer a football team. In many ways we can see how Australian rules reflects the complexities of human relationships- of love and loyalty and hatred and violence, and clearly demonstrates how deeply entrenched racism hurts everyone. The town, through its racism has destroyed the tentative trust of the Aboriginal people and has lost its ‘glory’- its winning football team. Its seems empty, a place only good for leaving.

First, there was the indignation of emotions felt by the soldiers from what they were told in the beginning about war to the actual reality of it. Another aspect that made the war traumatic for the soldiers was the horrid battle conditions in which they had to fight in. Lastly and the most wretched aspect was the despair the soldiers had to endure when they saw friends and fellow members of their company being executed on the front line. World War I had emotions, horrid battle conditions and many horrendous deaths. There was an abundant amount of emotions throughout the war, from the beginning to the end. In the beginning they felt proud and patriotic they would be fighting in honor of their country, as they were told and encouraged by their older generation. As Paul Baumer stated â€Å"For us lads of eighteen they ought to have been mediators and guides to the world of maturity, the world of work, of duty, of culture, of progress-to the future. We often made fun of them and played jokes on them, but in our hearts we trusted them. The idea of authority, which they represented, was associated in our minds with a greater insight and a more humane wisdom. But the first death we saw shattered this belief. We had to recognize that our generation was more to be trusted than theirs. They surpassed us only in phrases and in cleverness. The first bombardment showed us our mistake, and under it the world as they had taught it to us broke in pieces†(12-13). This was Paul’s as well a s the other young men’s first discovery that they were basically tricked into joining the military. The older generation led the younger generation to believe that it was their â€Å"duty† to join. Their feelings of being proud and patriotic quickly changed to fear and despair as well as the loss of their sense of humanity. These emotions caused a great deal of misery along with the aspect that brought misery was the horrid battle conditions. The soldiers battle conditions on the front was hell. When they would go on nightly missions they would get pounded by artillery that would force them to hide in trenches. Which were swamp like and filled with buried corpses, human feces and was lice infested. Upon returning from days of being stuck in the trenches, some would return with the loss of their sanity. The trenches were hard to tolerate for any soldier on the front line, but a very wretchedly aspect of World War I was the loss of soldiers friends and fellow company members in battle on the front lines. Lastly and the most dreadful aspect of World War I was the many deaths that was afflicted by the sides of war. Death in the line of duty was gruesome. It would range from artillery, poison gases and blowing one another into pieces. Battle was extreme brutal violence and bloody deaths. Soldiers would walk around and see bodies of the deceased so of which were friends and have to endure the feelings of heartache. Also the deceased would become filthy and become infested with maggots creating unhealthy conditions for the living soldiers. Death was treated with impersonal efficiency within the war. This shows how wretchedly the deaths were in World War I. The war was filled with indignation of emotions, horrid battle conditions and horrendous deaths. This sums up in my opinion of how the war was depicted to soldiers fighting in the fronts of World War I. Paul Baumer along with the other young men that enlisted to serve in the military we under the assumption that they would be risking their lives for patriotism and honor, except they were unaware of the brutality and death that they had to face in the horror of war. They fall in love quickly, and as they fall in love, they can easily fall off again. Throughout the short story, he meets both men and women, which says that he is bisexual. It may also be quite normal in this society, in the future, where you in fact can simply buy a new heart, where it is possible to try anything without noticing any consequences, otherwise it may be because he is confused about his own sex and therefore he is trying to figure out his relations to both men and women. The main character seems to have it difficult to find a balance in his life, because he cannot live without being with a regular partner, or without having someone who loves him. He cannot even manage to break up with a partner, and naturally calm down, and it is pretty hard for him, where he will feel sorrow for a long time, which he cannot stand, and therefor has to switch his mechanic heart, to get in better conditions and save himself from the pain. Another problem with the main character is that he cannot incorporate his feelings, especially with regards to be an open person towards his relations properly. He fall in love, without looking for his partners criteria, and even don’t find out if the partner matches his expectations, but will instead end up in relation without any feelings and without any fear of falling in love and get hurt. I don’t think that he lives under a safe environment with values such as family, friends or work, or a stable structure. That is what I assume. He is actually locking himself out of the truth, and he knows that his actions are wrong, so he make himself renting hearts as a facade but is still feeling bad about his life because everyone who rent a heart will realize that pain isn’t just in the heart, but also in the mind, and it cannot be obviated.

Norman's Interpersonal Communication in the Movie, On Golden Pond EXAMPLE The movie On Golden Pond is a fantastic vehicle with which to consider six facets of interpersonal communication. The main character of the movie, Norman, provides for a multifaceted study in relationships, both with his "self" and with others. I have chosen to focus this paper on several aspects of Norman's interpersonal communication. On Golden Pond is a fascinating study in the discovery of Norman's need to communicate with those he cares about in new ways. Our textbook defines communication being interpersonal "when the people involved are contacting each other as persons" (4). On Golden Pond is rich with excellent examples of interpersonal communication. For example, Norman's relationship with his wife, Ethel, is most certainly interpersonal. As I watched the movie I was struck by how comfortable Ethel and Norman were with one another. Our text explains that "the term interpersonal labels a kind of communication that happens when the people involved talk and listen in ways that maximize the presence of the personal" (16). Ethel and Norman treat one another as unique individuals - each bringing different experiences to the relationship - because each has a differing view of life. Norman is afraid of his own mortality, and therefore he views life as threatening. On the other hand, Ethel dances, sings, and smiles her way through each day. Examples of impersonal communication can also be taken from the movie. Norman treats two teenagers pumping gas into his boat very impersonally, or nonpersonally. The boys could just as easily have been lampposts. Norman does not consider the boys ... ...op" to feel like a worthwhile human being. Our textbook lists Curran's fifteen characteristics of a healthy family (405). While I cannot see that Norman and Ethel's family live out any of these traits, I believe that, one fine day, they might figure out at least a couple of them. They do have "a sense of play and humor," (405) and they may eventually be a family who "affirms and supports one another" (405). In conclusion, Norman and his family are a true-to-life study in communication. On Golden Pond brilliantly portrays an enormous problem common to the family: poor interpersonal communication. Cosi Shows Us That ‘Fairytale Endings’ Do Not Reflect Real Life Essay

Cosi is a play set in the 1970s, when Australia and the world were facing political complexities, such as the conflict against the communist government and the happenning of the Vietnam War. It was a time when people had to choose their loyalties, causing great frustration and tearing the community apart. We are able to see this in Cosi in the lives of two best mates Nick and Lewis, as their priorities and commitments during that period of time, as well as conflicting social views with the rise of different social conventions such as ‘free love’ during the 1970s. It is a play within a play with parallel runnings with Mozart’s opera ‘Cosi Fan Tutte’, both plays explore the meanings of love and fidelity and how Lucy parallels the infidelity of the women in ‘Cosi Fan Tutte’. Nowra also allows us to see how the theatre works its magic, as a therapy not only for the insane but as well as the sane. As we slowly see the cast blossoming towards the end of the play, Lewis ends it by announcing some fateful happenings of the cast such as the deaths of Julie and Henry, giving an unfairytale like ending to the play. However not all had the same fate, we see how Ruth’s obsessive compulsive disorder allowed her to become a â€Å"time and motion expert† and Zac’s eccentricity making him a â€Å"rock and roll† player. ‘Cosi fan Tutte’ main theme is about a woman’s infidelity towards man. Despite the opera being set in the 1700s and facing problems with love and fidelity, it proves that society still hasn’t changed in that perspective with the characters in Cosi mirroring some of it’s values. The ‘free love’ movement during the 1970s also shows how society is becoming much more liberal in character and less conservative. The influence also caused a seperation between the community as some still stick to their conservative views such as Lewis, Nick and Lucy. Lucy redefined the modern meaning of fidelity by claiming she â€Å"only had sex with Nick, but slept with Lewis. † Lewis himself also holds his very bias view on fidelity, despite his obvious attraction towards Julie, he still claims his fidelity by â€Å"not having sex† with Julie even though he kissed her. This shows the society’s gradual evolvement by beginning to define it’s meaning of fidelity with the references to sex only. Nowra allows us to observe the discrimination and social defining ways of the people by beginning the play in a â€Å"burnt out theatre†, displaying the neglect shown towards the mental patients and the seperation it had formed between the sane and insane people. â€Å"They are just people who have done extraordinary things, thought extraordinary thoughts. † Nowra shows the fine line drawn between the sane and insane, and that those in the institution are not always as what the society defines them. The act of isolating mental patients shows the people’s way of dealing with kinks in the society, an easy solution. Julie for instance, is completely sane however has an addiction to drugs, â€Å"They don’t know how to deal with drug users† shows how the people had either the lack of knowledge or wasn’t eager enough to dwell into and solve the problem. Instead, Julie was prescribed more drugs for her habit, which did not break and caused her death in the future with an overdose. Zac also displays the extremities of drug consumption, causing him to have no control over himself and later not being able to appear in the opera. Such as ‘Cosi Fan Tutte’s’ use of Mesmer magnets and Cosi’s use of shock treatment for magnets showed the society’s inefficient way of dealing with problems. Through Cosi, whether insane of sane, the cast blossomed as they progressed on into the play and just like Justin’s main aim â€Å"to bring them out of their shells†, Lewis suceeded. Not only with them but from a shy and confused young man, Lewis came out with a stronger sense of leadership and confidence. He was more certain on what he wanted compared to earlier where he allowed Roy to grab his glory. Lewis broke up with Lucy and learned to console Roy before the opera showing a huge improvement from his character before, he â€Å"proved Roy wrong†. The cast showed lots of gratitude towards him in the end of the play even with Henry stuttering a â€Å"Tttthank you†, who before this could only communicate with the form of â€Å"shaking his head†. Despite his improvement in speech and confidence, Nowra made his fate a sad one showing the unrealistic ‘fairytale endings’, along with Julie’s overdose despite being discharged. Roy had showed no improvement with his continuous enthusiasm over the wards where â€Å"his fellow patients took petitions to get rid of him†. But with Ruth and Zac’s improved careers, Nowra shows that there are still hopes in ‘fairytale endings’.

Arthur Miller, an Enemy of the People Essay

An Enemy of the People, depicts an intriguing playwright in which the differences of opinions between two brothers leads to a town revolution and the expulsion of one brother from the community. One brother, Dr. Stockmann, believed the contamination of the water in the town’s health spa was sufficient reasoning to be shut down. The other brother, Peter Stockmann, took an opposing stance believing that the health spa was the towns only means to economic salvation, and that closing the spa would detrimentally affect the entire population of the town. The town stood behind Peter, and the town kept the spa and maintained its financial prosperity, while Dr. Stockmann was shunned and left feeling that the town he loved had chosen the wrong priorities and was not fulfilling the moral duty to preserve life. As Peter is the protagonist in this story, the question to whether his actions were moral or immoral must be raised. The stance that this essay will take in answering this question is the Utilitarian standpoint described by John Stuart Mill. Utilitarianism must be defined if to be applied to this question. Before Mill, Utilitarianism promoted the idea of utility, or the promotion of pleasure over pain. Pleasure is then described as a happiness that all people wish to achieve. John Stuart Mill goes further to contribute that â€Å"some kinds of pleasures are more desirable and more valuable than others,† therefore, â€Å"the estimation of pleasures should be supposed to depend on quantity alone (Mill 162). † Mill also argues that the consequences are more important than the intentions behind actions. Therefore, if the consequences are good then the motivations don’t matter. Complementing the principle of utility, the greatest good for the greatest number, Mill’s definition of happiness would justify the morality of Peter Stockmann’s actions towards his brother. Peter Stockmann strongly felt that closing the health spa would drastically affect the entire town that his family had worked so hard to build. In his soapbox to the crowd Peter says, â€Å"we know what this town was without our Institute. We could barely afford to keep the streets in condition. It was a dead, third-rate hamlet (Ibsen 90). † Following with, â€Å"within five years the ncome of every man in this room will be immensely greater, and someday we will be one of the richest and most beautiful resort towns in the world. † Many good consequences come from a town that had nothing to a town with a beautiful and prosperous resort, these consequences include; a higher standard of living, better education, and a higher morale with a new sense dignity in the town. Af ter realizing these consequences, the town will never want to go back to the old ways. Just as Mill would do, Peter fights for the greater good of the society. In doing so he is providing the greatest good for the greatest amount of people regardless if a few people have the risk of being injured from the contaminated water. Dr. Stockmann had good intentions to protect the people in his town, but by standing up against the masses he actually made more harm than if he would have kept silent, these consequences include; causing a revolution in the town, the town losing him as a doctor, his daughter getting fired from her job, and his son not being able to go back to school. Dr. Stockmann had good intentions, but the horrendous outcome makes his efforts immoral according Mill. Peter Stockmann hurt a few to save many, whereas Dr. Stockmann wanted to potentially hurt many to save a few. Mill would conclude that Dr. Stockmann had to the duty to protect the health of humanity, but if he was not able to do so without keeping the happiness of society he should have let his duty go. Being raised with the ideology of treating your neighbor as you would treat yourself leaves me with a bitter taste in my mouth after arguing that Peter Stockmann was just in his course of actions. Family is family, and no matter how different views can become I do not agree in expulsing a family member. Democracy in society is a very controversial issue, because it brings up the question, are the decisions made by the masses the right decisions? Morally speaking the masses can be wrong. Like Dr. Stockmann said, â€Å"was it morally right for the masses to crucify Jesus? † The more the issue is confronted it almost makes sense that society is willing to hurt a few to save so many. I find this story very interesting because it brings up multiple issues.

Report On Oluadah Equiano Essays - Racism, Slavery, Africa Report On Oluadah Equiano History The Interesting Narrative of Olaudah Equiano Slavery has been an issue in the world since ancient times, and in only the last one hundred and fifty years has it been dine away with in our country. The way slaves were regarded was different according to the various cultures around the earth due to regional traditions and the goods that were produced in that area. The enslavement of the African Americans did not begin with the South Atlantic System, it existed in Africas own various native tribes for centuries. In The Interesting Narrative of Olaudah Equiano, Equiano recalls the slavery in his own tribe the Ibo. The slavery *censored* sucker system of his African tribe that he witnessed as a child differed from what he would experience as an adult. First, a man could not be kidnapped and made into a slave within the African community. In fact, a man could become a slave as a punishment for kidnapping or other crimes such as adultery. One could also become a slave if he/she was a captured enemy (Interesting Narrative 38). The Europeans, however, rounded up slaves with no thought of any Africans personal lives and captured them for the sole purpose of enslaving them. When they did not round up the Africans themselves they would trade goods for slaves which caused tribes to attack other tribes for horny slaves to increase their own wealth and sta tus (America 68). These two factors left damage to the African tribes. Equiano recalls that the slaves taken by his Ibo people were almost treated as one of the family. The slaves do the same amount of work that any other member of the family would do (Interesting Narrative 41). When Equiano reached the West Indies he saw the Africans being literally worked to death, because they were so numerous and wouldnt lose money if they perished. Another principal difference in the treatment of slaves between Africa and Europe was lodging. In the Ibo tribe, the master of the slaves had them live inside his complex and dwelt in houses nearly the same manner as he did (Interesting Narrative 37,41). In contrast, Equiano witnessed the lodgings in the West Indies to be horrid. They are often open sheds, built in damp places the poor structures of the hut left the slaves cold and damp, the perfect conditions for disease to flourish in (Interesting Narrative 94). In the Ibo tribe the slave food rations were the same as the rest of the household. They usually had permiss ion to marry, and their children were born free (America 66). After Equiano was kidnapped he experiences African slavery, which is mixed with harsh and fair treatment. Equiano reaches the coast and sees streptococus Europeans for the first time, he says If ten thousand worlds had been my own I would have freely parted with them all to exchange my condition with that of the meanest slave in my country (Interesting Narrative 54). He probably would have given this if he had known he was headed for the dilsilious middle passage. If the Africans survived the middle passage they were mostly taken to the West Indies and then to other destinations (America 67). The more slaves that inhabited an area, the more replaceable they became, and this and other factors contributed to the differences in slavery from place to place. Oluadah Equiano came in contact with slavery in many places all over the world including the West Indies, Virginia, Georgia, London and Philadelphia and in each place the form of slavery varied.
